CONGREGATIONAL CARE

At Severna Park United Methodist Church, we reach out beyond the walls of the church building to help those in need.  Here are a sampling of opportunities to impact our local community.  Our Caring Ministries go beyond our local community reaching out to the entire world as shown on other web pages under our Ministries & Missions.

Bread MINISTRY

If you like to bake bread, any kind of bread, you might enjoy being part of a ministry that provides a loaf of fresh baked bread to first time visitors.

Tracy Prettyman is the coordinator.

COMMUNION MINISTRY

Trained lay ministers deliver communion monthly to sick and homebound members of the congregation. Dawn Cullis coordinates this ministry.

In addition to the roundtable format the group has a speaker each week and serves as a clearing house for a variety of resources. This networking group is open to anyone, you do not have to be a member of our church to participate. They meet each Monday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 AM in Room 203.

Judy Plymyer is the coordinator.

HOMEBOUND MINISTRY

The Homebound Ministry is alive and well at SPUMC, but can be even better with your help.

The purpose of this ministry is to keep in touch with our homebound members through prayer, calls, cards, and visits. We would like to form a rotation of members who would be willing to provide transportation to SPUMC members who would like to attend services. There will be sign-up sheets at the Homebound table in Fellowship Hall on Be the Church Sunday. Additionally if you know of someone who needs this service, please email Bette MacWilliams or see her at the blood pressure table on Sundays.

We would welcome additional volunteers. We meet for an hour 3-4 times a year, and ask only that you have a heart for the homebound.

Kindness Kitchen

Volunteers provide meals to those in the congregation who need assistance during times of illness or other crises.  Members of the Kindness Kitchen Ministry Team all agreed that the grace of the ministry works both ways as many recalled how they were blessed by taking a meal to someone.

It's not necessary to be members of our church to receive this service. Persons may request meals by contacting the church office at 410-987-4700, or by filling out a request form located at the Welcome Center

If you would like to participate in the committee, need a meal or know of someone who does, contact Bette MacWilliams

PRAYER
MINISTRY

There are many facets to our prayer ministry. For example, prayer requests from the congregation are prayed over by our prayer team, pastors, and staff throughout the week. They are also passed on to the many members of our prayer chain.

QUILTING MINISTRY

The Quilting Ministry of the United Methodist Women does hand quilting for donation to Volunteers In Mission (VIM) recipients and shelters.  They also make pillows taken to Appalachian Service Project (ASP) and VIM recipients.  They teach beginning hand quilting classes from time to time.

Judy Plymyer is the coordinator.

Shawl
Ministry

The goal of our Prayer Shawl Ministry is to offer comfort to those experiencing chemo, radiation, or other treatment for diagnosed cancer as well as those receiving dialysis or in a church home.

Members of the Shaw Ministry knit and crochet the shawls, lap robes, hats and slippers.  By the time a shawl is completed, it is filled with prayers, providing not only physical warmth but also great spiritual comfort and an understanding of another's struggles or grief.  A prayer shawl is worth thousands of words.

SISTERHOOD

Sisterhood reaches out to women within our church walls to meet their needs and concerns through a network of support. They come together as sisters in Christ, to connect with our Lord and with each other in good times and in bad times. They hold bible studies, an annual retreat and a Christmas Tea.

 Dawn Cullis is the coordinator.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

The Stephen Ministry is a confidential, lay-caring ministry grounded in Jesus' command to love one another. Those who are going through difficult times receive love and support through one-to-one caring relationships.  The ministry is named after Stephen, one of the first deacons in the early Christian church, commissioned by the apostles to care for the needs of people in the Christian community.
