Raise Roofs, Fix Floors, Build A Whole New You!

The Appalachia Service Project is a non-profit home repair project with and for the poor of Central Appalachia.  It is offered through the United Methodist Church but is open to all denominations.  The goal is to give senior high youth an opportunity to put their faith into action while making a significant difference in the lives of Appalachian families.

     

The volunteers who go are placed into 6-member work teams overseen by competent, faithful adults; each work team works on the home of one family for a week, thus getting to know them well and understand a different culture.  Evenings are spent in discussions with singing, group games, and usually a trip out to a local ice cream parlor.  The trip is from Saturday to Saturday, usually in late June or early July. 

       


Appalachia Service Project (ASP) provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation -- bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families. But ASP is more than just a building program. Yes, Appalachia's poorest families urgently need your help, but they can help change your life, too.

Through their eyes, you'll see yourself as the person you've always wanted to be. Compassionate. Committed. With the power to make a difference.

Through their gratitude, you'll be inspired to serve others in every area of your life. Through their down-to-earth faith, your own faith will grow stronger. And your relationship with God will grow deeper every day.

We like to say that our goal is to make homes "warmer, safer and drier" for needy families. And for more than 40 years, we've done exactly that for thousands of families. Yet for all that, we are only able to serve one in ten families who apply to us for help. We need many, many more volunteers to make a lasting dent in Appalachian poverty.

Youth who are interested must:

  • be attending members of UMYF (or college alumni)

  • attend informational meetings and training

  • participate in fund-raising and follow up activities

  • complete a simple application, medical forms, and pay a registration fee

  • contact Rev. Lee Ferrell.
